In 2015, a report was released by the International Agency on Research for Cancer (IARC) that stated glyphosate was “probably” a human carcinogen. Specifically, they stated it can cause both lung cancer and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in humans, as well as causing cancers in animals. Meanwhile, the Ramazzini Institute has recently completed a piece of research that demonstrates daily exposure to glyphosate has genotoxic effects in rats. The U.S. National Toxicology Program has revealed that Roundup, a glyphosate-based Monsanto weed killer, is even more toxic than the chemical on its own and that it kills human cells. The result is that some 4,000 individuals in this country have taken legal action against Monsanto, now owned by Bayer, and one man, Dewayne Johnson, has won his battle and was awarded $285 million.
Clearly, it is confirmed: Roundup can cause Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
The Link between Glyphosate and Health Hazards
The IARC revealed in March 2015 that, after completion of their carcinogenic studies, the most respected in the world, glyphosate should be reclassified as a Class 2A “probably carcinogen”. In that same year, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), part of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in California, stated that they would list glyphosate as a known carcinogenic as part of Proposition 65, meaning it should be listed on the product label. In January 2016, Monsanto sued the OEHHA, but they won the case in February 2017. See also How Carcinogenic Are Roundup and Glyphosate?
We now know that glyphosate can:
- Stop the body from producing fully functioning proteins.
- Stop the pathway of shikimate, which are the gut bacteria.
- Stop the functioning of P450 cytochrome enzymes, thereby inhibiting vitamin D activation.
- Disrupt the synthesis and transport of sulfate.
- Chelate vital minerals.
- Stop methionine and aromatic amino acids from synthesizing, thereby leading to a shortage in neurotransmitters and folate.
- Act as an antibiotic that disrupts the microbiome of the gut in humans and animals.
- Destroy the lining of the gut.
- Impair the methylation pathways.
- Stop the pituitary release of hormones required to stimulate the thyroid, potentially leading to hypothyroidism.
Roundup Is More Toxic than Glyphosate on Its Own
The Ramazzini Institute, a highly respected Italian scientific organization, is currently working on a study that aims to determine exactly how toxic and carcinogenic glyphosate is. They have completed the pilot phase in which it was revealed that the EPA’s acceptable daily dietary exposure level could lead to genotoxic effects, changes the intestinal microbiome, and changes the sexual development in rat subjects.
Additionally, the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) has recently revealed that the specific Roundup formulation has far higher levels of toxicity than glyphosate on its own. They have stated that the product can be lethal to cells and cell membranes.
Roundup Linked to NHL in Court
It will come as no surprise that for every study suggesting Roundup and glyphosate is toxic, there is a counter study that claims the opposite. However, when we look at what is happened in the courts, it seems that public perception is leaning strongly towards the evidence against Monsanto. Some 4,000 people have so far filed suits against Bayer/Monsanto stating that their product caused them to develop NHL. 425 of those have been added to a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. See also Roundup Lawsuit Settlements Update.
Meanwhile, Dewayne Johnson was granted a fast track trial because of the fact that his NHL is now terminal. He is just 46 years old and used Roundup on average 30 times per year over a three year period in his role as the Benicia school district, CA, groundskeeper. He often had to spray hundreds of gallons at a time and also spilled the product on himself several times. He was diagnosed with NHL in 2014 and filed a suit two years later when he became incapable of working. Although a fast track case, he has only recently completed the trial and was awarded $285 million in both compensatory and punitive damages. Clearly, one jury believes that Roundup absolutely does cause NHL.
Meanwhile, there are significant other concerns about being able to definitely prove that glyphosate and Roundup in particular cause cancer. The Monsanto Papers, which have recently been made public, show that a lot of the evidence they had in support of their claims that their product was completely safe was falsified. They also cite reports from the EPA that list acceptable daily exposure, but this has now already been shown to be incorrect. Monsanto itself has also written articles that were then used by the EPA to make decisions about the safety of glyphosate, a clear conflict of interest. And some evidence shows that Monsanto deliberately suppressed information of data that would have been damaging to their case.
Monsanto Has Done it Before
Monsanto has an incredibly poor global reputation for producing toxic products and effectively taking over the global food supply. Time and again, they have produced products that turned out to be clear carcinogenic materials and deliberately hid this until they could deny it no longer. Some examples of those products include:
- DDT, used in the control of insects.
- Agent Orange, used during the Vietnam war.
- GMO crops.
- Recombinant bovine growth hormones.
- A seed patenting model and the enforcement thereof.
Indeed, Monsanto is now facing a separate lawsuit started by Beyond Pesticides and the Organic Consumer’s Association. They have filed a lawsuit in April 2017 on behalf of the general public. They claim that Monsanto marketed Roundup using deceptive labeling. While this case is still pending, it seems sufficient evidence will be provided. Not too long ago, after all, Monsanto advertised Roundup as “leaving the soil clean”, “environmentally friendly”, and “biodegradable”, all of which is now known to be untrue. What Doctors Say
Most independent physicians, oncologists, epidemiologists, and toxicologist have no doubt that Monsanto’s toxic chemicals are causing serious damage to our health and the environment. They have also expressed concern at the apparent unwillingness of governments to act upon this. Their fear is that the interests of major biotech companies are seen as more important than human life. This is evident from the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows GMO crops and GMO pesticides to be freely used, claiming that they are inherently safe. See 3 Examples of How Roundup Causes Cancer.
One only needs to look at Argentina to see that governments are unlikely to ever stand up against the big biotech corporations:
- Out of 34 members of the National Advisory Committee on Agricultural Biotechnology of Argentina (CONABIA), 26 are employed directly by a biotech company or have another clear conflict of interest.
- Argentina’s countryside is dominated by single crop fields, including soy, corn, and GE cotton.
- Argentina’s environment is being destroyed and the people are suffering from unusual levels of physical deformities and degenerative diseases.
The reality is that it is unlikely that the governments of the world will ever publicly admit that the products made by Bayer/Monsanto and other such companies are 100% confirmed to cause cancer, at least not until a new product is released. However, as a member of the public, there are plenty of things that you can do regardless. Monsanto has our food supply in its grips, but the tide is very clearly turning with people standing up to what they feel is right. Dewayne Johnson has been an example to many, and it is up to them to now carry this on. See also Can Using Weed Killer Give You Cancer?
On a global scale, people are becoming proactive, blatantly refusing to eat any kind of GE crops or foods that are known to have pesticides or toxic chemicals used on them. Additionally, the organic sector and the grass-fed sector is seeing tremendous growth. People now prefer to buy local, standing up for the little man and joining community supported agriculture (CS) programs. Doing so is an investment people make not just in their own health, but also in the local economy and their own community.
Furthermore, people are taking preventive measures to lower their exposure to toxic chemicals and how these affect their body. They specifically search for non-GMO food sources, listed in resources such as Local Harvest, Farm Match, The Cornucopia Institute, the Eat Well Guide, and the Weston A. Price Foundation.
Monsanto continues to try and rule the world and to make people think that they have no choice but to comply. In reality, however, things couldn’t be further from the truth. The evidence and the court cases confirm it: Roundup causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Do you want to continue to purchase Roundup and glyphosate-based products just because Monsanto says it is perfectly safe?
